Anniversary story for Sam, made by Alex

The long wayto loving you.

Mar 2019 to Jun 2025 · 41,208 messages · 9 chapters

From a goodnight that took an hour to our own front door. Six years of messages, in your own words.

A note before the rest

Happy anniversary, Sam

I went back through six years of our chat to write this. Turns out we said all the important things already, I just put them in order.

Our little story

It started with a long goodnight.

12 Mar 2019

“stay on the phone a bit longer, i like the sound of you”

You both said goodnight at half ten. Forty one messages later, neither of us hung up first.

8 Sep 2019

“i've told my mum about you, so it's official now”

Sunday roast, three questions about my job, and she sent you home with a tin of biscuits.

4 Aug 2021

“our own front door. ours.”

Two suitcases, one saucepan, and 600 messages arguing about a paint colour you still love.

Jun 2025

“you're still the first person I want to tell”

Six years in and nothing important happens until I've told you about it.

Why you

Six years, six reasons.

These are the ones that keep turning up in our chat without either of us trying.

01

You stay on the phone.

From that first hour long goodnight to the calls I make from the car park just to talk.

02

You remember everything.

The appointment I was dreading. The song from the taxi. The name of my nan's cat.

03

You made a home.

Not the flat. The feeling of walking in and someone being glad it's you.

04

You are honest with me.

Even when it's easier not to be, especially when it's easier not to be.

05

The ordinary days.

Tea, terrible telly, your feet on my legs. My favourite part of any week.

06

Because it's you.

Six years of messages and every single one of them still points at you.

The actual card bit

To Sam,

Happy anniversary. Six years ago you told me to stay on the phone a bit longer, and honestly I never really got off it.

Somewhere between the late calls, the Sunday roast where my mum interrogated you, the flat with the awful kitchen, and two thousand goodnights, you turned into the person I measure everything by.

I love that you are gentle without being soft about the things that matter. I love that you tell me the truth first and comfort me second. I love how much you love the people who are yours.

So this year: no big gesture, no restaurant we can't pronounce. Just every good thing we already said to each other, written down properly.

Alex x

P.S. I counted. 287 “I love you”s. You are winning by nine.

One last thing

Happy anniversary,my favourite person.
