How to export your WhatsApp chat.
It takes about 30 seconds and works on both iPhone and Android. Export without media, save the file, then upload it here. Zip files are fine, we open them for you.

Open WhatsApp and go to the chat you want to turn into a story.

Tap the contact or group name at the top to open Contact Info.

Scroll all the way down and tap Export Chat.

Choose Without Media, this keeps the file small and is all we need.

WhatsApp opens a preview of the chat text. This is normal, tap the share icon in the top right corner.

In the share sheet that appears, choose Save to Files. Pick a folder, for example On My iPhone, and tap Save. The .txt file is now saved to your Files app.

Come back here, start a story, and upload the file. If WhatsApp saved a .zip, upload the zip as it is, we open it for you.
Always pick "Without media"
Exporting with media produces a huge file that can fail to upload. We only read the text, so the smaller export is both faster and more private.

Why 'without media'?
Media exports create huge zip files and we don't read your photos or voice notes anyway. Text-only exports are faster, smaller, and everything we need to write the story.
It saved as a .zip, and I can't unzip it on my phone
You don't need to. Upload the .zip exactly as WhatsApp saved it and we open it for you and pull out the chat automatically. Unzipping is optional, not required.
WhatsApp opened a preview of the chat instead of saving it
That happens on iPhone. When WhatsApp shows the chat text on screen, tap the share icon in the top right, then choose Save to Files to save it. The preview is the chat itself, not an error.
The chat is enormous. Will it still work?
Yes. Very long chats work fine, we read the whole file on your device and pick out the moments worth keeping. There's no message limit.
Can I use a group chat?
Absolutely. Group exports work well for family stories, friendship anniversaries and leaving gifts. You choose whose voice the story is written for.
Do I have to use WhatsApp at all?
No. You can build a story entirely by hand, write your own chapters, add photos and quotes. The chat export just gives you a much faster head start.
