A chat log is one of the most personal files you own. Here's exactly what happens to it.
Your chat is read in your browser first
When you choose a WhatsApp export, the file is opened, unzipped and read inside your browser. It is never uploaded to us and never stored anywhere, it lives only in that browser tab.
Only a sample is used for writing
To draft the story we send a small selection of representative lines, and before they leave your device we strip out phone numbers, email addresses, card-like numbers, passcodes, links and postcodes. We never send your full conversation history, and we never sell or share it.
Nothing is public by default
Stories are private until you publish them. Published stories are reachable only through the unlisted link you choose to send.
Photos are stored privately
Photos you add live in private storage and are served through short-lived signed links, so they can't be crawled or guessed.
Delete whenever you want
Deleting a story removes the story, its chapters and its photos from our systems. There is no chat file to delete, because we never stored one.
